The Films:
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt: “Odette Toulemonde”
He is known for his novel “Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran”, which was filmed in 2003 with Omar Sharif in the leading role and won the German Book Prize in 2004. In 2001 he received the “Grand Prix du theatre de l’Academie Francaise” for his theatre pieces, which have been performed in 35 countries and translated into numerous languages. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt now presents his directorial debut: “Odette Toulemonde” tells the original, amusing and moving story of Odette, a saleswoman working in the perfume section of a large department store whose passion is ignited by the successful author Balthasar Balsan. When the critics tear his newest book to pieces and he discovers his wife is having an affair with his publisher, the spurned artist falls into a depression and is in desperate need of consolation – Odette’s big chance has arrived... This charming love story, told in the tradition of Amelie Poulain, has already captivated over 800 000 cinema visitors in France.
Ingo Rasper: “Reine Geschmacksache”
The comedy “Reine Geschmackssache”, feature film debut of the 33 year-old director Ingo Rasper, won multiple awards at this year’s Max-Ophuls-Festival, receiving both the Audience Award and the SR/ZDF Screenplay Award. Wolfi is a sales representative selling classical women’s fashion and vehemently opposed to the ‘funky cheap-price segment’. He feels increasingly threatened by the modern collection of his archenemy Steven Brookmüller who, to make matters worse, sabotages his business dealings. Things are no better at home: His wife Erika has had just about enough of being treated like a servant by her husband and his son Karsten is unhappy that he cannot travel to Spain to attend a language school because he now has to chauffeur his father around from customer to customer. As Karsten falls in love with Steven Brookmüller, a debacle seems unavoidable. Edgar Selge, known to audiences as Kommissar Tauber in “Polizeiruf 110”, and his wife Franziska Walser, play the leading roles. Laconically applied situations and amusing dialogues make this cheerful family comedy into an entertaining cinema experience.
Sabine Derflinger: “42 plus”
Director Sabine Derflinger was catapulted into the leading squad of Austrian director hopefuls with her first feature length film “Vollgas”. She has already demonstrated her versatility with numerous documentaries and short films. As co-author of “42 Plus” the director now demonstrates her capability as an author. “42 Plus” tells the story of the 42 year-old, attractive media woman Christine (Claudia Michelsen), who has a professionally successful husband, a pubescent daughter and a friend whose husband she is secretly seeing. During a family holiday at their holiday home in Italy, Christine meets the young Tamaz and is immediately fascinated by him. As daughter Sonja enjoys her untroubled first love, her mother also realises that she has by no means fulfilled all her wishes and desires.
