Three competition winners and the “Golden Icon Award” for Morgan Freeman Sunday 04. October 2009
The three prize winners of the Zurich Film Festival’s “International Feature Film”, “German-Language Feature Film” and “International Documentary Film” competition categories have been announced:
The Russian contribution "Wolfy" by Vasilij Sigarev won the International Feature Film Competition, the best German-Language Feature Film award went to "66/67 – Fairplay is over" by Carsten Ludwig and Jan-Christoph Glaser and, celebrating its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival, the German/Swiss co-production "The Sound After the Storm" by Patrik Soergel, Ryan Fenson-Hood and Sven O. Hill topped the International Documentary Film Competition.
The documentary film "Defamation", an Israeli production by Yoav Shamir, and the German-language films "13 Semesters" by Frieder Wittich and Gravity by Maximilian Erlenwein received a special mention. [more]

Press Release, September 27, 2009 - The planned "A Tribute to ..." Award ceremony for film maker Roman Polanski will go ahead in his absence. Roman Polanski, one of the greatest film directors of our time would have received an award for his life's achievement at the Zurich Film Festival. However, he was detained by the police upon his entry at Zurich Airport. His detention is linked to the demand by US-authorities to a warrant for his arrest in 1978.The festival directors have received this news with great consternation and shock. They have decided that the "A Tribute to ... Roman Polanski" night will take place with a few changes.
Thirty Films in Three Competitions, Ten World Premieres and Celebrated Guests Thursday 10. September 2009
Festival directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri and curators of the Competition Programme and Out of Competition Films Christine von Fragstein and Nikolaj Nikitin, announced the nine renowned and experienced speakers of this year’s Zurich Master Class and the jury members for the two international competitions at today’s 5th Zurich Film Festival press conference. Three-times Oscar® nominated actress Debra Winger will preside over the International Competition’s five-(wo)man jury and Director Erwin Wagenhofer, whose films We Feed the World and Let’s Make Money caused a sensation, will head the International Documentary Film jury. He will be joined by the reputed Swiss documentary filmmaker Peter Liechti and the British producer Elizabeth Wood to decide who will win the „Golden Eye“ in this category.

Dieter Meier and Christian Frei Return to Zurich Film Festival with World Premieres Wednesday 09. September 2009
Two former jury members and Swiss filmmakers will return to the Zurich Film Festival with their latest film projects: on Saturday, September 26, 2009, multi-talented Dieter Meier will present the director’s cut of his fantasy feature film The Lightmaker, in which he embodies the character Balthasar and worked behind the scenes as the film’s director, producer, screenplay writer and composer. Oscar® nominated director Christian Frei will premiere his latest documentary film Space Tourists in Zurich on Friday, October 2, 2009. Both films will be shown in the Zurich Film Festival’s Out of Competition series and will be screened in the cinema corso’s theatre 1. [more]
Another Highlight at the Zurich Film Festival: Michael Keaton presents his Directing Debut “The Merry Gentleman” Monday 07. September 2009
Michael Keaton made his international breakthrough with his embodiment of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s comic adaptation and box office hit Batman (1989). The Golden Globe nominated US American actor will now come to Zurich in a new role, namely that of a director, to launch a European premiere on October 1, 2009. On this evening at 21:00, his directing debut The Merry Gentleman (2008) will be screened in the cinema corso 1 as part of the 5th Zurich Film Festival. Keaton also plays the protagonist Frank Logan in this drama, alongside Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men, Finding Neverland) and newcomer Tom Bastounes. [more]
