With the series New World View, The Zurich Film Festival presents the latest films from Russia, a country whose revived film industry is still widely unknown in the West. At the centre of this series is a talk on Monday that focuses entirely on Russian film. The festival’s Russian guests discuss the development and future of Russia’s cinematic output, its radical change since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the general conditions for film production in Russia.

The Prophet with the Rose-Tinted Glasses_A Talk with Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Mitt woch, 3.10., 12.00 bis ca. 13.15 Uhr, Theatersaal


The French writer Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, best known for his books Hôtel des deux mondes, Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du coran and numerous pieces for theatre, speaks about his directing debut Odette Toulemonde (presented the evening before as a Gala Premiere within the framework of the Zurich Film Festival) and his artistic work as a writer, theater author and film director. Following the talk, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt will be available to answer questions posed by the audience and sign books.

This entertaining talk will be held in two languages (German and French) by Tobias Eisermann who works in close collaboration with Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt.

German-speaking film has experienced something of an upsurge of late; the market share of domestic production has steadily increased over the past few years. Can German and Swiss cinema productions continue to exist beside American studio productions in the future? When does a film enthuse audiences, industry and critics? What makes a good story, how does promising film marketing work and how do these factors interact to produce a successful Swiss, German or Austrian production?

Unthinkable several years ago, downloading films from the Internet using a broadband connection now presents few technical problems. Closer examination, however, presents new questions: How can authors and producers defend their intellectual property rights? Why should consumers no longer be allowed to pass films on to third parties? Does the Internet really provide us with new opportunities for distribution or is film financing being undermined by these technical possibilities?
